SBA Program Helps to Bridge the Small Business Gap

The U.S. Small Business Administration’s national network of Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) plays an essential role in the economic development of their states and local communities through their direct, face-to-face counseling for small businesses, according to a report released today by the SBA. The report, produced by the National Small Business Development Center Advisory Board, focuses on SBDCs’ impact on small business access to SBA’s programs and services, including access to SBA capital, procurement, disaster and international trade programs.

The report confirms that SBA’s SBDC program remains an essential part of the agency’s mission to help small businesses. The report, The SBDC Program: An Indispensable Partner in America’s Economic Development, demonstrates statistically the prolonged impact that SBA-funded SBDCs have on the formation and growth of small businesses.

Last year, more than 557,000 entrepreneurs received business advice and technical assistance through the SBDC program. In its more than 30-year history, SBDCs have assisted millions of small business owners and entrepreneurs to successfully start and grow small firms by fostering entrepreneurship and growth through innovation and efficiency.

Initiative Will Help Entrepreneurs Expand Business in Jacksonville

Mayor Alvin Brown has announced Mayor Brown’s Business Builder, a program designed to help small businesses gain a deeper understanding of what it takes to succeed and to help connect entrepreneurs with capital and credit. It will be held Tuesday, Feb. 7 at noon at the Prime F. Osborn III Convention Center. The event will feature instructional speeches from U.S. Small Business Administration Administrator Karen G. Mills and Tom and Sue Bennett, the board chairman and senior vice president of First Oklahoma Bank.

Mayor Brown’s Business Builder will have useful information and networking opportunities for everyone from start-up entrepreneurs to more established small business people who are looking for avenues of growth.

International Trade Workshops Return!

The International Trade Certificate Program - Export Series introduces companies to every aspect of exporting. It's designed for small businesses that are new to international ex¬porting as well as growth-oriented businesses that want a better understanding of the opportunities and resources available.

First Startup Weekend Event in Jacksonville

The Small Business Development Center at the University of North Florida with the Indo-US and JAX Chambers is co-hosting the first Startup Weekend Event in Jacksonville.

Startup Weekend is an intense 54 hour event which focuses on building a web or mobile application which could form the basis of a credible business over the course of a weekend. The weekend brings together people with different skillsets - primarily software developers, graphics designers and business people - to build applications and develop a commercial case around them. With partners such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Twillio and the Kauffman Foundation, Startup Weekends occurred in 295 cities worldwide, engaged more than 35,000 entrepreneurs, and helped 2,450 startups launch.

The Jacksonville event begins Friday evening with aspiring entrepreneurs pitching ideas for possible businesses or products. All participants will vote on the top 10-15 ideas and form 10-15 teams to develop each idea. Saturday and Sunday, teams focus on customer development, validate ideas, practice LEAN Startup Methodologies and build a viable product. Teams are mentored by local tech experts and seasoned startup leaders. Sunday evening, the teams demo their prototypes and receive valuable feedback from a panel of experts and investors. Jacksonville Startup Weekend will announce the top three winners who will receive a package of in-kind services to help them launch their new business.

Student builds energy drink brand with SBDC assistance

The long hours and taxing shifts as a sonar technician and search-and-rescue diver at Mayport Naval Station were draining.

Coffee didn’t cut it when he needed to stay alert and focused. Neither did those sugary, massively caffeinated energy drinks.

So, Brian Smith, a University of North Florida marketing junior, decided to create his own energy drink using dissolvable tablets made with simple ingredients and fewer additives. He’s even created an entire company — Fighter Energy — to sell the tablets online.

“It’s an alternative for those who don’t want the normal methods of getting your caffeine — a cold cup of office coffee or stacking those energy drinks with all the sugar,” he said.

The brand message — my world, my fight — isn’t necessarily a call to arms, Smith said. Even though the mixed martial arts community has embraced the product, Smith said the message is more about personal empowerment.

And when Smith was looking for a way to further empower his company, he turned to UNF’s Small Business Development Center.

Kevin Monahan, a certified business analyst and special projects director for the SBDC, said Smith approached him last March in the hopes of boosting his business acumen and establish his brand.

Smith began by taking a business startup course at the SBDC and received training and business counseling from Monahan.

Even during the early stages of building his business, Monahan said Smith’s approach was far more nuanced than many other small businesses he’s helped.

“Brian didn’t come to the SBDC with an idea or a plan, he came with the finished product in a point-of-purchase box and packaging,” Monahan said. “He funded this out-of-pocket and has already put in a tremendous amount of work. That shows that he's got a great chance for success because getting over the initial hump is what separates a lot of successful businesses from the not-so successful businesses.”

That UNF-based training — at the SBDC and in the classroom — paired with Smith’s shoe-leather business building work has helped establish Fighter Energy as an up-and-coming player in the world of effervescent supplements.

His brand is now being sold by a number of different distributors — most notably Amazon.com.

And UNF will continue to aid in the company’s continued growth.

Dr. Lakshmi Goel, who teaches information systems at the Coggin College of Business, is going to work with Smith and some of her students to help develop a social media plan for Fighter Energy.

Smith said the University-based assistance has been integral as he the learns ropes of entrepreneurship.

“This education I’m getting at UNF will be just as important as the connections I’ve made here,” he said. “From the classroom to the SBDC, they give you everything you need to be successful and point you in the right direction. I couldn’t have gotten this far without them.”

The SBDC offers individual counseling for area business owners and entrepreneurs. The center serves 18 different counties and offers workshops and classes for participants. More information is available by contacting the SBDC at (904) 620-2476.

Veteran Women Entreprenuers.....This One Is For You!

Have You Heard About V-WISE? V-Wise is a new program that is open to all female Veterans with a passion for entrepreneurship and the desire to start their own business(or female spouses/partners of Veteran Business Owners - please email vwise@syr.edu for more information).

The program begins with an online course focused on the basic skills of entrepreneurship and the language of businesses. Once the online course is completed you are eligible to attenda three-day conference where participants are exposed to accomplished entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship educators from across the United States. The program includes a 'growth track' tailored to those participants already in business, and a 'startup' track focused on potential future entrepreneurs.

Thanks to SBA funding, the cost to the participant is only a $75.00 registration fee and transportation to and from the conference. Hotel, books and food costs are covered by the grant.

Admission is on a rolling basis, and early application is highly encouraged. Selection is based on proof of military status and demonstration of entrepreneurial passion on the application. Participants must be able to complete the online component of the program and be able to travel to one of the mandatory conferences held at numerous times from spring 2011 through fall 2013. The next conference will be held in Lake Mary on March 2-4, 2012.

UNF SBDC Success Story: BandZorb

"The SBDC at UNF has offered incredible support for my start-up business endeavor."

Terry Zebouni is the inventor of the revolutionary BandZorb® disposable headwear liners – the world's first self-adhesive, absorbent, ultra-thin liners that come in two sizes, fit virtually all headwear and may be cut to fit children's and teen's headwear. They have a soft, cotton feel and were inspired by Terry's own frustration, during her many times playing golf, in trying to prevent sweat and makeup from dripping into her eyes.

Having obtained the assistance of a Small Business Resource Network attorney in applying for a patent for her product, Terry turned to the Small Business Development Center at UNF for direction in how best to launch and market her business. She initially met with Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) representative and Certified Business Analyst (CBA) Lisa Haggerty, who provided advice in getting the product before Department of Defense procurement decision makers. CBA Paul Arrington assisted Terry in developing a strong business plan, a focus group questionnaire, overall marketing strategy and financial projections. When Terry realized that she needed additional working capital to finance portions of manufacturing and operations Paul was able to assist her in obtaining an SBA express loan. Michael Chung, a CBA in the SBDC's Gainesville office, was called upon for his insights on pricing, marketing and distribution matters as was CBA Patrick Fitzgerald.

Terry's product has achieved high recognition and was awarded "Best Overall New Product in Show" in the Inventors' Spotlight at the 2011 PGA Merchandise Show. In June 2011 the business became an official licensee of the PGA tour and now proudly displays the PGA Tour logo on BandZorb® packaging and marketing materials. In October 2011 the BandZorb ® liner was one of three finalists for The Cygnus Law Enforcement Innovation Award in the apparel category and is one of four finalists selected for the prestigious 2012 Visionary Award presented by the International Non-Woven Association (INDA) in New Orleans in January.

Terry has this to say about her experience with working with the Small Business Development Center at UNF, "Paul Arrington, an expert business analyst, was easy to talk with about my challenges. With his assistance I was able to secure a SBA loan, to review and understand my financial projections, to learn how to make a "pitch" to investors and much more. A key finding of the report is that SBDCs help local economies by improving the odds for startup small businesses. “SBDCs,” the report says, “are solely focused on creating and supporting small businesses which in turn pay taxes, provide employment and diversify the economic base for their states. . . The businesses that work with the SBDCs are the job creators and enterprises that have the potential for survival and growth.”

The report also highlights the effectiveness of SBDC counseling in improving the chances of small businesses that are seeking credit. “SBDCs have intimate knowledge of what lenders really want and need from borrowers to increase the likelihood of them being able to make a loan. The SBDC Business Advisors provide solid technical expertise to coach borrowers through the lending process.”

The report found that the 900 SBDC service locations provide a necessary local footprint in the communities they serve, delivering unique offerings tailored to the needs of its small business community.

The report also found that the SBDC program, for which the federal government covers half the cost, remains one of the government’s best investments because of its close associations with other SBA resource partners, federal, state and local government small business assistance programs and service providers; universities and community colleges; and private enterprise and local nonprofit economic development organizations.

The nine-member independent advisory board provides advice and counsel to the SBA Administrator and associate administrator for the Office of Small Business Development Centers on the SBDC program.

We caught up with UNF SBDC client and 11 year NFL veteran, Coach Lonnie Marts who has a vision for athletes and their training. He and his partner as well as the instructors at Godspeed Sports Performance have a unique philosophy which makes them special. Here is the interview:

What is the mission of Godspeed Sports Performance?

Our mission at GodspeedSP is to restore honor of being called an of athlete by developing youg people to possess great character as well as skills.

What inspired you to start this business?

I was inspired to start this company because I loved training and being in the NFL for 11 years. That experience showed me that our athletes needed discipline off the field as well as on the field. By the time they reach the NFL they're grown men, but many still exhibit childish behavior which creates chaos in their lives and in their community. My vision is to train them at a young age to be more responsible for their lives on and off the field.

What do you do that makes you different from other performance coaching organizations?

What makes us different from other performance coaching org's is our ability to tailor our programs to meet the needs and goals of each athlete and we take stock in our athletes lives off the field as well, parents love influence from positive role models! Another aspect that sets us apart is our philosophy "Athletes Training Athletes", we house instructors and coaches whom teach their respective sports to championships and are highly regarded as experts in their field. With this benefit we can produce great players whether they need to correct bad habits or establish good initial habits. There is no other sports speed and skill enhancement company like it.

Who is your customer?

Our customers vary in age but are always athletes who want to achieve better fitness by way of expert sports training.

Tell us about your facility.

Our facility is 20,000 square feet of sports training adrenaline! We have the areas only indoor coin operated pitching machine. We also have seven indoor 50 foot plus batting cages, a strength training room and a 40 yard by 20 yard turf field… all indoors. Coming soon are in- house sports massage and physical therapy from Heartland medical.

Any special programs coming up we should know about?

Our next big event is a Fundraiser/Grand opening, to be held on SuperBowl Sunday. The event will benefit the National Guard Association here in Jacksonville. Sponsors are always welcome! The event will have bounce houses for children, speed and agility demonstrations and adult fitness demonstrations. Our in-house instructors will be giving lessons to all guests. There will be food, fun, door prizes and more, since this is a family event we are only serving non- alcoholic beverages. Admission is $10 per adult and $5 per child, all proceeds go to The National Guard Association. Start time is 5 p.m. on Superbowl Sunday February 5, 2012

National Association Survey Notes Small Business Optimism

The National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB) Small Business Index which measures the attitude of entrepreneurs is up again. This is the third month in a row where the sector has demonstrated optimism in the economy. You can read the NFIB study here. It appears the long crawl back is picking up speed. Hopefully retail sales during the holiday season will reflect the same optimism by consumers. One tends to lead to another.

Recent UNF surveys show little movement in the Jacksonville economy. Lets hope 2012 turns out to be a better year.

2012 Presents a New Opportunity to Own Your Own Business

With a new year on the horizon, it’s a perfect time to dream about the future and set new goals and resolutions. If your plans include starting a new business, the best place to start is with the United States Small Business Administration (SBA).

The SBA has an office in every state, and we have lenders, counselors, and other partners who work in thousands of communities across the U.S. With their help, we have been knocking down obstacles for entrepreneurs and small business owners for nearly 60 years.

In fact, for the fiscal year that just ended, we helped provide nearly 8,500 loans to small businesses in this Southeast Region. Nationwide, we had our biggest year ever.

Generally, we can help in two big ways.

First, if you’re someone who has a few ideas down on paper and you need someone who can help you formulate a business plan, the SBA or one of our “resource partners” is a great place to start. You can find local help by going to www.sba.gov/direct and typing in your zip code.

For example, you can often find our Small Business Development Centers at local colleges. Also, check out www.SCORE.org , a volunteer organization with more than 350 chapters and more than 10,000 mentors, many of whom have been successful executives themselves.

The best part is that these folks can often help you for free.

The second situation where SBA and our partners can help is if you’re already a small business owner.

Many small business owners have come to us over the past two years, looking for ways to reinvent their business and grow in the face of tough economic times. Whether it’s getting an SBA loan, winning your first federal contract, or learning the ins-and-outs of exporting, the SBA and our partners can get you the information and the local connections you need.

Why is all of this so important?

Economists agree that small businesses are a big part of the solution to getting our economy moving again and to creating jobs that we lost in the recession. President Obama and Congress have used – and continue to use – the SBA and other federal agencies to help you get the tools you need to succeed.

In particular, the President is pushing for more tax relief for small businesses, especially those that are looking to buy more equipment or hire more workers. We need to make sure that small businesses have every possible incentive to help build on the growth that we’re beginning to see in the economy.

I’m particularly proud of our efforts to help veterans, thousands of whom are returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. We’re working to ensure that businesses have every incentive to hire veterans, and that veterans themselves can transform their skills and leadership into starting a new business of their own.

The Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC), provides free counseling services to local businesses interested in obtaining contracts with the Department of Defense, other federal agencies, state/local government agencies and prime government contractors. Government Contracting 101-Monthly Lunch & Learns

What are the potential benefits of doing business with the government? The objectives of this lunch and learn is to understand how the government buys goods and services; how to become certified and registered on the federal, state and local levels; finding government contracting primes and subcontracting opportunities. Also covered will be the benefits and requirements for small business participation as 8(a), Small Disadvantaged Business (SDB), Disadvantage Business Enterprise (DBE), Historically Underutilized Business Zone (HUBZone), Woman Owned and Veteran Owned Business enterprises.

Workshops

The Procurement and Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) provides the information and training needed to do business with the government. The following is a list of training dates for business owners and managers who are interested in expanding their sales to the federal, state or local governments.

Each workshop is $40. Purchase four or more workshops in the PTAC series the cost is only $30 per workshop. All attendees must be pre-registered for these workshops. No walk-ins or payments at the door will be accepted.

Marketing to Government

Learn how to market your business to government buyers and prime contractors that purchase your firm's products or services. Workshop topics include identifying buyers, developing a government-specific marketing strategy, developing government contracting-specific marketing materials and establishing key relationships.

GSA - Is It Right For You?

Learn about GSA contracting and how this purchasing method is used by government to buy products and services. Topics include GSA's objectives in awarding schedule contracts, the pros and cons of pursuing a GSA schedule contract, why federal buyers do and do not utilize GSA schedule contracting, things to do prior to taking the GSA schedules plunge and an overview of the how-to of submitting a GSA schedule proposal.

Proposal and Bid Writing - Tips and Techniques

Learn the guidelines and critical steps for writing convincing, successful contract proposals and bids. Workshop topics include obtaining the solicitation package, bid or no bid decision making, preliminary preparation for bidding, qualifications and evaluation criteria, proposal elements, the source selection process and common proposal problems.

8(a) Essentials

How do you successfully apply for admission to the federal 8(a) program? What strategies should your firm consider to maximize its potential to benefit from 8(a) contracting? This workshop examines the 8(a) application process, what SBA is looking for from an 8(a) participant, 8(a) joint venturing and marketing the 8(a) firm.

WOSB (Women Owned Small Business) and EDWOSB (Economically Disadvantaged Women Owned Small Business)

The WOSB Federal Contract Program will provide greater access to federal contracting opportunities for women owned small businesses (WOSBs) and economically-disadvantaged women-owned small businesses (EDWOSBs). The Program allows contracting officers, for the first time, to set aside specific contracts for certified WOSBs and EDWOSBs and will help federal agencies achieve the existing statutory goal of five percent of federal contracting dollars being awarded to WOSBs. Learn how certify for this program, the current status of the program with the SBA and the next step for procuring agencies.

Learn How to Do Business with Puerto Rico

If your small business has not explored Puerto Rico as a market to sell or source your goods and services, then the Doing Business with Puerto Rico event might be for you. Representatives from the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce based in San Juan will join officials from the San Juan government to present an overview of Puerto Rico business sectors and resources to help you do business there. Also, local and federal U.S. trade representatives will discuss resources to help you sell your product in Puerto Rico -- and you’ll meet key contacts with the Jacksonville Sister Cities Association San Juan Committee.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta studies various factors in the U.S. economy in its research and deliberations in helping formulate the nation's monetary policy, and the small business engine is seen as vital to achieving a robust economic recovery. Additionally, the FSBDC Mobile Assistance Center (MAC) will be on site during the workshop. The MAC is a 36 ft. RV equipped to take SBDC Certified Business Analysts into disaster-stricken areas to help small businesses recover. With satellite communication, wireless computers and a resource library, the MAC provides access to much needed advice and assistance for small business owners when (and where) they need it most.

Congratulations to Lisa Haggerty for being chosen the top Certified Business Analyst in the North Florida Region! Lisa has been with the Small Business Development Center at the University of North Florida for a relatively short time but has already made a big impact. Her talents in counseling businesses who want to do business with the government, has led to millions of dollars in economic impact through our Procurement Technical Assistance Center Program (PTAC). She has held the position as Marketing Chair on the Board

for Society of Marketing Professional Services where she coordinated federal and local programs for small and large business, as well as being a sustaining member of the Society of American Military Engineers. Lisa has worked as a project administrator and business development specialist with M‐B LLC, a service connected disabled veteran owned company providing architectural, engineering and construction consulting services. She was responsible for identifying government contracting opportunities; marketing to area procurement professionals at conferences, trade shows and in person; proposal and presentation

preparation; and contract review and administration.

Lisa primarily works out of the Small Business Development Center at UNF office, providing individual, confidential business counseling as well as training in government procurement. She also provides one on one counseling services in 18 counties in Northeast Florida and meets with business owners at the Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce and Beaver Street Enterprise Center.

Lisa holds a Bachelors in Science degree from the University of North Florida as well as being a Certified Business Analyst.

IRS Marks Small Business Week With New Tools!

During Small Business Week, May 16-20, the Internal Revenue Service encourages those who are self-employed or own a small business to take advantage of certain tax benefits and learn about IRS resources that can help them meet their federal tax obligations.

“When you’re running a business, you don’t need to be a tax expert, too. But you do need some basics to stay tax compliant so your business can thrive,” said Faris Fink, IRS Commissioner for the Small Business and Self-Employed Division. “There are many tax credits and deductions currently available. So now is a good time to learn about the tools and services the IRS offers.”

The Small Business Tax Center (www.irs.gov/smallbiz) has links to some of the most useful tools the IRS offers, including the Virtual Small Business Tax Workshop, a downloadable tax calendar, common forms and their instructions and help on everything from how to get an Employer Identification Number (EIN) online to how to engage with the IRS in the event of an audit.

The IRS is offering a free, 30-minute webinar called “Small Business Advantage” to show small business owners what’s available to them. The webinar is scheduled for Wednesday, May 18 at 2 p.m. ET. To register and watch, visit IRS.gov and type “webinars” into the search box.

Health Care Tax Credit, Accelerated Write-Offs

The IRS today also urged small businesses to take advantage of tax-saving opportunities available when they file their 2011 returns. Two key provisions that business owners should consider are the small business health care tax credit and faster write-offs on certain capital expenditures.

The small business health care tax credit aims to help small employers provide health insurance coverage to their employees. It is specifically intended for those who employ low- and moderate-income workers. The credit is designed to encourage both small businesses and small tax-exempt organizations to offer health insurance coverage for the first time or maintain coverage they already have. More information about the credit is available on the Affordable Care Act page on IRS.gov.

Many small businesses that invest in new property and equipment can deduct most or all of these purchases on their 2011 returns. Normally, businesses recover capital investments through annual depreciation deductions spread over several years. But many small businesses can get these deductions sooner during 2011. Claim these tax benefits on Form 4562. Special rules and limitations apply. Details can be found in the instructions to Form 4562, Publication 946 and Revenue Procedure 2011-26

Florida Minimum Wage to Increase June 1st!

Effective June 1, 2011, the Florida minimum wage will increase to $7.31 per hour. Also effective on June 1, 2011, those “tipped employees” in Florida who otherwise meet eligibility requirements for the tip credit under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will have to be paid a direct cash wage of at least $4.29 per hour. This is an amount equal to the new Florida minimum of $7.31 per hour, minus the $3.02 hourly tip credit permitted under Florida Law. Florida’s minimum wage increases typically occur at the beginning of a calendar year. However, this particular increase is the result of a legal challenge to the formula used by AWI in calculating the Florida minimum wage for 2010 and 2011. The Jacksonville Acquisition Conference held on Thursday, April 21^st at the UNF University Center was a huge success! Back by popular demand, the conference presented by the Department of Defense and members of the corporate sector gave over 150 attendees the opportunity to network and exchange current information on technical innovations in program management, logistics, engineering, contracting and budgeting through seminars and a tradeshow. The conference attendees had an opportunity to hear from Shyam Reddy, Regional Administrator for the Southeast Sunbelt Region of the U.S. General Services Administration, who spoke highly of the men and women of our armed forces as well as veterans and his “passion about his support of small business”.

Federal Government May Close, UNF SBDC to Remain Open.

As of this writing, it looks like the Federal government will be closing due to the budget impasse. In our world, that means the Small Business Administration offices will be closed and therefore most small business loans will not be going forward as there will be nobody there to process them. Here is the SBA's Plan for Operating in the Event of a Lapse in Appropriations.

Please keep in mind that in the near term all Small Business Development Centers will be OPEN. Our SBA award for 2011 will only be partially funded until Congressional Leaders settle their differences concerning overall budget. However, we do not expect this to impact on our service delivery since we leverage various funding pools. All these monies will help us provide services during the interim.

1. What makes your product unique? (UNF)

Most shoe designs today do not consider the entire foot. In fact, most of what the human foot should do in terms of movement and flexibility is held back by the same designs used today. Fut Glove designs shoes to enhance flexibility and movement by considering the entire foot in the design process. Our shoes provide a unique five toe glove fit that allows more flexibility than the standard shoe design and with that being said, our shoes are designed for a function, not solely for their appearance.

2. How have people received your shoes? (UNF)

It has been a tremendously gratifying experience, we always get a reaction. We see instantly how customers feel about our products from the moment they put them on. Comfort seems to be the biggest thing we hear our customers say and they are also pleased with our unique shoe designs.

3. What makes us different from the competition? (UNF)

In the past, the market for five toe shoes has grown but only targeted a very select audience. We are looking to change that, our shoes are designed for everyone. The comfort and quality we've put into our shoe is not directed towards one specific segment of the market but to anyone that wants the additional freedom, comfort and flexibility of wearing a five toe shoe.

4. What was the hardest part about starting the business? (UNF)

The hardest part about creating Fut Glove was developing a strategic plan that we feel will make the company a long-term success. Our strategic plan is rooted in our Mission Statement, Vision Statement and Value Statement. We believe these things are important for establshing our company's culture, which focuses on (1) providing a product which promotes foot health, (2) product innovation, (3) operating with integrity, and (4) contributing company profits to worthy causes. We feel the right corporate culture is essential to our success. Many other aspects of developing this type of business have been done before, including identifying a product, identifying a target market, finding a manufacturer for the product, and acquiring funding to drive the business. However, as we know, most small businesses ultimately fail. We asked ourselves what aspects of eventually successful businesses are missing from most start-up companies. We believe the most critical factor for success in a start-up business is its people, and their commitment to the company. We therefore wanted to establish a company in which the employees share these values and a commitment to the product's success.

Also, when you have a great product or idea, taking to market correctly, especially at an early stage is vital. In our case we had multiple opportunities for distribution but selecting the right partners is so important to getting any product off the ground. The early success in our sales depended a lot on where to place the product and how we wanted to start building our brand. We had so many ideas and opportunities to distribute the product initially that we eventually narrowed our approach down to a very controlled set of partners that matched how we wanted to approach the market.

SBA Eliminates Date Restriction for 504 Refinancing

The US Small Business Administration initially restricted the new refinancing option to small businesses that faced balloon payments on mortgages before Dec. 31, 2012. That eliminated an awful lot of companies that we eager to refinance. It has just been announced that effective April 6, the SBA will open the 504 refinancing option to businesses with balloon payments due after that date. Florida Department of State Division of Corporations has issued the following Consumer Alert: Compliance Services (not to be confused with the Florida corporation, Compliance Services, Inc.) is mailing notices to business entities requesting that "Annual Minutes" and a fee of $125.00 be sent to them for filing. These notices are NOT from the Dept. of State, Division of Corporations. "Annual Minutes" are NOT required to be filed with any agency. They are to be kept by the business entity itself. Do NOT confuse these notices with the messages sent by the Division of Corporations reminding each business entity to file its 2011 Annual Report.

Additionally, Arvitas, LLC is a private company sending e-mails to businesses in Florida offering to file annual reports. ARVITAS IS NOT AN AGENT OR REPRESENTATIVE FOR THE FLORIDA DEPT. Highlighting the speaker list for the SBDC's upcoming International Trade Certificate Program are Jorge Arce and Larry Bernaski. If you've never met them, then you are missing out on a wealth of knowledge that could help your business expand by exporting. Jorge is Director and Senior Trade Specialist with the US Commercial Service/US Department of Commerce. And his sole purpose is to assist and consult Northeast Florida companies on exporting "made in USA" products worldwide. Larry Bernaski is Enterprise Florida's Regional Manager of International Business Development in Northeast Florida. He provides export counseling for Florida manufacturers, export intermediaries, and service companies and promotes the State's export programs, including trade shows and trade missions. SBA Announces New Loan Programs

SBA and U.S. Department of Commerce studies have shown the importance of lower dollar

loans to small business formation and growth in underserved communities.

With that in mind, the two new loan initiatives – Small Loan Advantage and

Community Advantage – are aimed at increasing the number of lower-dollar SBA 7(a)

loans going to small businesses and entrepreneurs in underserved communities. The

agency’s most popular loan product, 7(a) government-guaranteed loans can be used

for variety of general business purposes, including working capital and purchases of

equipment and real estate.

In conjunction with the implementation of these two new Advantage loan initiatives

by March 15, the agency will end its existing Community Express pilot loan program

on April 30.

Built on what the agency refers to as its “Advantage” platform, both Small Loan

Advantage and Community Advantage will offer a streamlined application process for

SBA-guaranteed 7(a) loans up to $250,000. These loans will come with the regular 7

(a) government guarantee, 85 percent for loans up to $150,000 and 75 percent for

those greater than $150,000.

Small Loan Advantage will be available to the 630 financial institutions across the

country in the agency’s Preferred Lender Program (PLP). Under PLP, which includes

most of the agency’s highest volume lenders, SBA delegates the final credit

decisions to lenders.

With Community Advantage, the agency will expand the points of access small

business owners have for getting loans by opening SBA’s 7(a) loan program to

“mission-focused” financial institutions, including Community Development Financial

Institutions, Certified Development Companies and non-profit microlending

intermediaries. Community Advantage will leverage the experience these institutions

already have in lending to minority, women-owned and start-up companies in

economically challenged markets, along with their management and technical

assistance expertise, to help make their borrowers successful.

Women in trades are being taken seriously

The Air Conditioning Heating Refrigeration News, a national trade publication recently ran a feature article about the need for women employees and owners in the trade. It features our client Saundra Jones, president of Alpine Air Inc. in Jacksonville. The article goes on to discuss the rise in women in trades and how that can and should be encouraged. This is great to see as we have worked with or were invited to speak at trade associations where there were few women in the room. Counselors at the UNF SBDC have had many women owned trade businesses express how difficult it has been for them to be taken seriously in their male dominated industries. That viewpoint appears to be changing and it is good to see.

What the Small Business Bill Means for You

You’ve probably heard about it, read about it, or even watched the news stories on TV. And now its official, President Obama has signed the small business bill into law. But what does this mean for you and your business?

A few of the highlights:

1) Small banks will be loaned money by the government, who in turn make loans to small businesses. The small banks will receive significant interest discounts for repayment of their loans only if these banks can increase the dollar amounts loaned to small businesses by 10 percent.

2) The government is waiving fees for SBA loans. In addition, the maximum allowable loan was increased for several varieties of SBA loans. The 7(a) and 504 programs increased maximum loan amounts from 2 million to 5 million dollars, while the Express program increased maximum loan amounts from 3 hundred thousand to 1 million dollars.

3) New tax write-off laws are available for purchasing capital, changing the time periods in which write-offs can be accomplished.

The SBA could hopefully back increased amounts (both monetary and numerically) of loans to small business owners. The SBA’s monetary numbers for backing loans are down this year ($16.84 billion) from 2007 ($20.61 billion). This bill could provide a much needed boost for business financing. But be aware, due to the down economy, banks are still setting stringent standards for loans. So if you’re looking for financing, be sure to get your ducks in a row.

SBDC at UNF employees receive CBCP designation

The Small Business Development Center at the University of North Florida announced today that Robert Myers and Cathryn Hagan have received their Certified Business Continuity Professional (CBCP) Designation from Disaster Recovery Institute International (DRII), whose certifications are recognized worldwide as the professional credential in business continuity management.

In order to obtain certification, applicants must complete a two-part process that includes a qualifying examination and an application that is reviewed by a panel of experts in business continuity. DRII's CBCP certification is reserved for individuals who have demonstrated knowledge and skill in the business continuity and disaster recovery industry. Additionally, regular recertification requires an ongoing commitment to continuing education and industry activities.

Myers and Hagan are the first in the Florida SBDC network to earn the designation and are among only a few in the ASBDC national network.

About Robert Myers: Joining the UNF Small Business Development Center in 1992, Myers is responsible for management assistance efforts in Duval as well as surrounding counties. Being a former business owner, he has over 20 years experience in sales, finance, marketing, product development and computer information systems. In his business career, he was involved in startups, acquisitions, divestiture, venture funding, small business loans and many other small business matters.

About Cathy Hagan: As an Area Director for the SBDC for over 16 years, Hagan facilitates workshops and meets one-on-one with existing and potential business owners. She serves on the Florida SBDC’s statewide Business Continuity & Risk Management Team, helping small businesses prepare for and respond to disasters. Hagan earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Emory University and her Master’s Degree from the University of South Florida. Prior to joining the SBDC, she worked in the field of marketing and training in both the health insurance and banking industries. She is a member of Oceanside Rotary and a graduate of Leadership Jacksonville’s Class of 2002.

Entrentrepreneurship lessons to be learned from Miami Heat

Nice article in the Miami Herald about the management team of the Miami Heat. The article points out that not only will the teams acquisition of top talent (LeBron, Dwyane Wade and,Chris Bosh) bring in a lot of dollars for merchants in the Miami Area, there are also entrepreneurship lessons to be learned. The teams management set long term goals knowing years ago it wanted to assemble this cast of players. They carefully worked the salary cap to position themselves in front of their competition.

An interview with Peter Schönning, president, Polyhistor International

Polyhistor international is a Jacksonville company that helps people and companies take an idea and turn it into a product. We caught up with UNF SBDC client Peter Schönning and asked him to tell us more about his unique company.

How did you come up with the name Polyhistor for a company name?

Polyhistor (ˌpä-lē-ˈhis-tər) = A person with broad knowledge, from Greek poluistōr, very learned

(The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition). I was looking for something different, but still a name that had meaning. I figured – what a great name for a consulting company that has experience in a wide range of market segments!

What do you believe are the three most important services you offer.

Bringing rough ideas to finished products

We do the entire product development chain from paper napkin sketch to Industrial Design to 3D CAD to Prototype to Manufacturing. We can do any or all steps. Our designs are always made with the manufacturing process in mind.

Manufacturing and Prototyping

We do contract manufacturing which includes assembly, castings, injection molding, sheet metal, and CNC machining. We deliver turn-key products to our customer.

Engineering

Designing and reengineering of machinery parts and equipment. We also do some engineering analysis.

I am very proud of that we have worked successfully in so many product fields, like fiber optic and LED lighting, defense contracting, medical, consumer products, and the automotive industry. Additionally, we have helped many inventors with their dream products.

Polyhistor is an 11 year old business here in Jacksonville. What do you believe are the factors that have contributed to your success?

We believe our success comes from a sense of persistency, a smile on our face, and a “can do attitude”. We are driven to maintain our great reputation, and we want our customers to feel good about our workmanship. Inventor, Margaret Bynoe says: “The drawings look Greeeat!! Makes me want to run out and buy one, tell me where to pick it up...” and Brian Clark, an inventor who used someone else before coming to us wrote: “The prototype looks so much better, the gray metallic looks really, really good ”. We stand by our work, this is important in the long term.

What would you say to someone who believes that no one is inventing or making things in this country anymore?

That is not really true. There is still a steady stream of inventors (lots of paper napkin sketches) that are coming up with great creative ideas to solve problems. In fact there seems to be an increasing number of inventors that want to develop their products now when the economy is slow. With respect to manufacturing, it is possible to be very competitive here in the US, especially with shorter lead times and getting to market faster. There is nothing like eye to eye contact and a hand shake with your customer. This is still the land of opportunities and entrepreneurship.

An interview with Crissie Cudd, Manager, Watson Realty, Southside

Crissie is a dynamic marketer and networker for all things Watson. She is constantly looking for new ways to make her Realtors more successful. We caught up with her at the SBDC office...

How did you wind up in real estate?

I used to sell “bodies” for a living – I was in the temporary employment industry. And I grew tired of my “product” either not showing up or not performing. I figured if I was going to sell something I’d sell something more dependable – like houses. They always show up. Twenty years later, here I am, still in the business, only as a manager now.

Why Watson?

You’ve heard the expression “size doesn’t matter”? Well, in this business it really does. Watson has been a part of Jacksonville for over 40 years and we have over a 20% market share. That’s huge. The name “Watson” has come to mean something in the community. We get calls from customers whose parents were Watson customers or who have been repeat Watson customers over the decades.

Mr. Watson is still at the head of the company and he still believes in delivering “legendary, quality service” to our customers. We will always do what’s right. You can’t ask for more than that in the company you work for.

How many people do you have at the Southside location?

We have 28 of the greatest folks ever in our office. I may be a bit prejudiced, but I believe that great people make great Realtors® and vice versa. Not all of our agents live nearby. We have agents who live at the beach, in St. John’s County, on the Northside, etc. But our office is the epicenter of Jacksonville and we can service clients all over the area within about 15 minutes in any direction.

What kind of support do you give to your realtors?

Watson as a company provides great training and at my office I do individual coaching, based on each agent’s needs. Plus, we have a team of “givers” who share ideas, help each other out, and pitch in to make it a great team. And of course, we have all the Watson tools at the agents’ disposal, with more and more being added all the time.

What advice would you give to someone who has never sold real estate but might want to explore it as a career?

Well, first of all, you couldn’t pick a better time than now. Unlike during the heyday of a few years ago, customers need a good Realtor® now more than ever. So it’s easier to establish your credibility with customers who are facing a much more complex market than before. The market has also weeded out the agents who were just dabbling in the business and what’s left are professionals who work hard to stay on top of their game. Getting in now allows a new agent the time to actually learn the business the right way and actually make a good income. Some of my top agents have are relative newcomers to the field. And, of course, a new agent needs the support of a quality company and a great office!

David and Patricia Watkins have big hearts when it comes to pets. That's why they started their business, Pet Shots Cheap. They set up pet clinics staffed with veterinarians and techs at Winn Dixie and Advance Auto stores on weekends to provide inexpensive shots and brief physicals for dogs and cats. It's a simple business model but takes a lot of planning and organization to make it work. David and Patricia work closely with Cathy Hagan at the SBDC at UNF as their business grows.
